The Human Performance Laboratory at Adelphi University has and continues to be an established entity within the University. For over 30 years the Human Performance Laboratory has been an excellent facility for teaching and research. The Human Performance Laboratory operates out of the Department of Health and Sports Sciences at Adelphi University, and is primarily used by our Exercise Science and Pre-Physical Therapy Faculty and Students for experimental research, clinical research, clinical practice, and teaching.
The Exercise Science Program provides our students with an extraordinary education in an effort to guide and prepare them for health related fields. The Exercise Science Program prepares students for careers in strength and conditioning, exercise leadership and personal training. Courses include learning objectives for the American College of Sports Medicine’s Exercise Physiologist certification. Students of the Exercise Science Programs (both undergraduate and graduate) become leaders in fields pertaining to physical activity, exercise, medicine, pre-Physical Therapy, and allied-health related professions. Our commitment to teaching and providing our students with up to date research is unmatched. The success of our program is built on academic excellence and exposing our students to clinical and experimental experiences.

The Human Performance Lab at Adelphi University is a teaching, clinical, and research facility that focuses on oxygen uptake mechanics, neuromuscular function, metabolic function, body composition, maximal aerobic and anaerobic performance, musculoskeletal function, and cardiac function in a variety of populations. The facility utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to assist in measuring data and assist with teaching. Some of the equipment utilized includes Parvo Medics Metabolic Cart as a form of indirect calorimetry, BTS force plate system, 3D motion capture of kinematics, Biodex Isokinetic dynamometry, DEXA scan, Hydrostatic Weighing Tank, Quinton Q-Stress Cardiac Stress System, and Lode Upper Extremity and Lower Extremity cycle ergometers. The equipment utilized in the Human Performance Laboratory allows for credible research opportunities and teaching experiences. Furthermore, our equipment allows for us provide service to our community.
BTS Bioengineering’s technology allows for an easy and efficient work flow. Having the ability and flexibility to utilize either SMART Performance or SMART Clinic to assess performance based activities or gait mechanics has been incredible. The real time visualization provided through DIGIVEC software provides a great visual supplementation during teaching experiences within our laboratory. Furthermore, the software allows for creation of custom protocols to fit our laboratory’s needs.
