Overview

The Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) is a century-old educational institution nationally and internationally recognized. It is centered in Porto Alegre – the capital city of the State of Rio Grande do Sul – and it offers academic programs from all different fields of knowledge, for all stages of education, ranging from elementary to graduate school. Daily, more than 30 thousand people circulate its facilities in search of receiving one of the top 10 most qualified educations in South America. This, combined with its leading research programs and expressive community outreach, means UFRGS is ranked among the best universities in the country.

Within UFRGS, ESEFID, founded in 1940, is the oldest School of Physical Education in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with more than 50 professors in three undergraduate courses: Physical Education, Physical Therapy and Dance. Our history spans over 75 years, with great expertise in the three major areas of teaching, research and community outreach, which ensures the highest quality education.

The BIOMEC – Grupo de Investigação da Mecânica do Movimento, founded in 2001, located on the ESEFID campus, is a biomechanical research group dedicated to movement analysis and modeling.

Activities

Our research group is part of a post graduate program involving professors, post doc, PhD, master, and undergraduate students. We mainly work with Education and Research activities. Our members include professionals from the fields of Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Chiropractics, Dance and Engineering.

Principal areas of investigation in biomechanics: postural evaluation, Pilates, sports, dance, scientific modeling and instrument development using kinematics, kinetics and electromyography analyses, as well as modeling and inverse dynamics techniques.

Why BTS?

We find BTS techonologies invaluable to help us carry out a wide range of research. For example, to compare the overload on the lower back in different exercises, to measure the effect of kinesiotaping or the effect on COP oscilations after HVLA (High-Velocity Low-Amplitude) manipulation, to investigate the long-term effects of Pilates, among others.

Our research lab has been active for twenty years, and in the last 4 years, since we obtained BTS technologies, we have been able to improve our research procedures. Now, both data collection and analysis are faster and more accurate, which allows us to anaylise more complex human movements.

As a public institution, when purchasing, we are obliged to procure the best cost-benefit ratio. We chose BTS because they offer the best equipment and service at the best price.

We work with the main biomechanical techniques: eletromiography, kinematics and kinetics. For all these areas we use BTS devices and systems. For electromyography we have the FREEEMG wireless system with 16 channels. For kinematics we use the Smart DX Motin Capture System with 10 DX-7000 infrared cameras (4 MPixels, up to 500 Hz) and the six G-WALK inertial sensors which include a triaxial accelerometer, triaxial gyroscope and triaxial magnetometer. For kinetics measurements we have four force platforms. We can also obtain analogical signals from non BTS devices such as load cells, which increases our range of research of possibilities.

As a lab with a wide range of devices, it is not unusual to have technical problems. But with Kinetec-Tecnologias Biomecanicas, the company which represents BTS in Brazil, we have responsive and efficient technical support.
